Sri Lanka has a vibrant media landscape with a variety of television and radio channels catering to different languages, cultures, and interests. Both government and private sectors operate in this space, providing content in Sinhala, Tamil, and English.

Television in Sri Lanka began in the late 1970s. The first TV station was the Independent Television Network (ITN), which is now state-owned. Later, other government-owned channels like Rupavahini and Channel Eye emerged, offering educational, cultural, and entertainment programs.

Private television channels expanded rapidly in the 1990s and 2000s. Popular private channels include Sirasa TV, Derana TV, Swarnavahini, Hiru TV, and TV Derana. These channels broadcast a range of content including news, teledramas, music, reality shows, and current affairs. Tamil-language channels like  Shakthi TV serve the Tamil-speaking community, while English-language channels such as Art TV cater to urban audiences.

Radio broadcasting in Sri Lanka has a longer history, beginning in 1925. Today, the country has over 50 radio stations operating under various networks. The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) is the national radio service, offering programs in all three main languages.

Private radio channels like Hiru FM, Shaa FM, Yes FM, TNL Radio, Sun FM, Sooriyan FM (Tamil), and Kiss FM provide music, news, talk shows, and entertainment. These channels target different age groups and communities, making radio one of the most accessible media forms across the country.

In summary, television and radio in Sri Lanka are diverse, competitive, and influential in shaping public opinion, culture, and entertainment. The industry continues to evolve with digital advancements and online streaming.
